Most embedded consultancies hand you a schematic and a repository. The hard part of industrial IoT is everything after that: the enclosure that holds at −40 °C, the radio link that closes across a lease, the certification file, the test fixture, the contract manufacturer who has to build it a thousand times identically.
Pass works across that whole span. Engagements typically start at requirements and area classification and end with a unit that has passed environmental testing, cleared ISED / FCC, and has a documented production and sustaining path. We work equally well as the entire engineering function for a small product team, or as the radio, power or firmware specialist inside a larger one.
The practice has been operating since 2022. For four of those years it delivered continuous hardware and firmware engineering to an industrial IoT company supplying the global mining sector — four connected-hardware product lines carried from concept through certification to mass production and field deployment. That engagement has concluded, and Pass is now taking on new clients.
Pass is the principal's full-time practice, and a small office by design — a limited number of concurrent engagements, each with his own hands on it. That is a constraint worth stating up front rather than discovering in month three.

- Fixed-scope NRE development, OEM and white-label product design, retained specialist support (RF, firmware, certification), and technical due diligence.
- Scoping
- Every engagement begins with a paid, short scoping phase producing a requirements document, an architecture, a certification plan and a costed BOM target. You own that output whether or not the build proceeds.
- Intellectual property
- Application-layer IP developed for your product transfers to you. Core platform IP — our reusable hardware, firmware and cloud foundations — is licensed, never assigned. This keeps your cost down and our platform intact.
- Open by default
- Open protocols, documented interfaces, exportable data. We will not build you a system that your next vendor cannot read.
- Field readiness
- Design work is done from our office; site attendance is arranged per engagement. Operator vendor qualification — ISNetworld, Avetta, ComplyWorks, COR, MSA and insurance limits — and the safety certification the site requires are completed before any site work is scheduled.

Oil & gas

Ajay Sandhu
Founder and principal engineer. Fifteen years in embedded systems and hardware engineering — analog, digital and RF circuit design, power supply design, multilayer PCB layout with signal- and power-integrity analysis, FPGA design and board bring-up, and firmware from bare metal through to Linux device drivers.
On the four-year mining engagement above, he served as director of connected systems and hardware, promoted to the role after three years as engineering manager. He led four cross-functional teams — hardware, firmware, production and customer support — with ten direct reports, and owned the connected hardware and firmware portfolio from proof of concept through mass production and customer deployment.
Earlier he led hardware development of a real-time emissions monitoring product for a Calgary oil & gas technology company, and has designed FPGA-based detection systems, automotive imaging hardware, high-speed data acquisition on SoC platforms, and networking and processor boards taken through DDR bring-up and volume production.
He is co-inventor on six granted US patents covering fibre-optic interferometric sensing and embedded vehicle audio intelligence, and holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Windsor.
